WOOD HUDSON CELEBRATES 25th ANNIVERSARY OF FOUNDING

Dr. Julia H. Carter

The Story: Wood Hudson Cancer Research Laboratory was incorporated January 26, 1981 with four pieces of equipment - a refrigerator, a typewriter, a file cabinet, and a microscope (the latter two are still in service). We had a donated place to work and $11,000 income the first year. Twenty-five years later, Wood Hudson has vastly increased staff, research facilities, research capabilities, and research collaborations.

Along the way, Wood Hudson scientists have published or presented more than 120 papers reporting their research discoveries. Research data from Wood Hudson has been: (1) published in peer-reviewed journals enabling use by other scientists to advance their research; (2) used by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in making regulatory decisions on risks of human exposure to drinking water chemicals; (3) used to further drug discovery and development.

Our scientists have also worked with 188 undergraduate students. Ninety percent of the students who have participated in our Undergraduate Research Education Program (UREP) and graduated from college are now physicians or other health care providers, scientists, or teachers. Many have stayed in the Northern Kentucky community.

These accomplishments could not have been achieved without the support of the more than 4,500 contributors who receive this newsletter. We thank you for your support as we work towards the conquest of cancer through research.

Does anyone remember polio? Polio was conquered through basic scientific research.

Cancer - help us end it!
