Julia H. Carter, Ph.D.

Founder, President, and Director of Wood Hudson Cancer Research Laboratory

Dr. Carter founded Wood Hudson Cancer Research Laboratory with her husband in 1981. Their determination to research cancer on a not-for-profit basis led to the creation of Wood Hudson. A meager laboratory with only a few pieces of equipment has grown into a world-class cancer research laboratory. Dr. Carter serves as Chairman of the Board of Trustees and is Project Leader for external research collaborations with industry leaders.

Dr. Carter's accomplishments include:

  • Publishing 32 peer-reviewed publications
  • Reviewer for 7 scientific journals
  • Member of 5 distinguished professional associations including the American Association for Cancer Research and the Kentucky Academy of Science
  • Outstanding Woman of the Year in 1994 by Thomas More College, Northern Kentucky University and the Kentucky Post
  • Recipient of the 2009 Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce SUCCESS Award for Small Businesses (nonprofit classification)
  • Acceptance of 132 grants from 37 foundations.

    Dr. Douglass serves as a Trustee, Chairman of the Scientific Affairs Committee, and is the Study Pathologist for external research collaborations with industry leaders. Dr. Douglass has worked at Wood Hudson for 29 years, and his experience is an invaluable resource.



    His accomplishments include:

  • Fellow, International Academy of Cytology

  • Membership in 3 distinguished professional associations including the American Society of Cytopathology


  • Dr. Schaeper is an Analytical Chemist whose research focuses on genetic susceptibility to cancer. Dr. Schaeper's extensive experience as a science professor has prepared him to be Director of the eminently successful Undergraduate Research Education Program.

  • Dr. Siwko is a Molecular Biologist whose research focuses on deciphering the cellular function of proteins that cause cancer. Dr. Siwko is the newest scientific cancer researcher at Wood Hudson Cancer Research Laboratory.

    Bruce's work is dedicated to preserving and protecting the more than 1,200,000 tissue specimens, including specimens from more than 59,000 cancer patients.


    Denise manages the histology laboratory, processes tissues, and prepares histologic slides for study.

    James Deddens, Ph.D.is a Biostatistical Consultant for Wood Hudson Cancer Research Laboratory and a Professor of Mathematical Sciences, University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, OH.

    Bernadette Hurst, HT/ASCP, MBA, MPH is the Information Technology Consultant for Wood Hudson Cancer Research Laboratory.

    Jessica is a recent graduate of Xavier University and the Undergraduate Research Education Program at Wood Hudson. Jessica began work as a Research Assistant at Wood Hudson after receiving her undergraduate degree. She is also enrolled in the University of Cincinnati Accelerated Nursing Masters Program.

    Robert is a recent graduate of Thomas More College and the Undergraduate Research Education Program at Wood Hudson. Robert began work as a Research Assistant for Wood Hudson after receiving his undergraduate degree.

    Elyse is the Biospecimen Repository Student Assistant at Wood Hudson. She is currently an undergraduate student at Northern Kentucky University where she is pursuing a degree in anthropology.

    Pat is the Executive Assistant for Wood Hudson Cancer Research Laboratory. She is the Office Manager, and she has worked for Wood Hudson for the past 24 years.

    Carole coordinates the audit of the Biospecimen Repository, assists with data entry, and assists with administrative duties.

    Georgia is Volunteer Coordinator for Wood Hudson. Her contributions over the past 12 years have led to many successful fund raising campaigns, events, etc.

    Jared is a recent graduate from the University of Cincinnati. After successful completion of the Scripps Howard Foundation Writing Internship he began full-time work at Wood Hudson.
