ABSTRACT
We have reported that coexpression of Ras/Jun occurred significantly more
often in colon carcinomas (C) than in polyps (P) or normal colon (NC) [PAACR
32 (1991):166]. To extend this observation, we examined a larger number
of C, P, and NC sections for Ras, Jun, and Fos expression using immunohistochemical
methods and antibodies specific for each oncoprotein. Also, polyps were
classified as tubular adenomas (TA) or tubulovillous adenomas (TVA). The
results were consistent with our previous results and indicated that Ras/Jun
expression occurred significantly more often in TVA (38%) compared to TA
(21%) but less than C (62%). Ras/Fos coexpression was nearly the same as
Ras/Jun while Fos/Jun expression was significantly less. The results indicate
that Ras/Jun or Fos coexpression are important events in later stages of
colon cancer, especially at the tubulovillous adenoma to carcinoma stage.
