T
he Story: Wood Hudson Cancer Research Laboratory was incorporated January 26, 1981 with four
pieces of equipment - a refrigerator, a typewriter, a file cabinet, and a microscope (the latter two are still in service).
We had a donated place to work and $11,000 income the first year. Twenty-nine years later, Wood Hudson has vastly increased staff, research
facilities, research capabilities, and research collaborations. A long the way, Wood Hudson scientists have published or presented more than 160 papers reporting their research discoveries. Research data from Wood Hudson has been: (1) published in peer-reviewed journals enabling use by other scientists to advance their research; (2) used by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in making regulatory decisions on risks of human exposure to drinking water chemicals; (3) used to further drug discovery and development. Our scientists have also worked with more than 225 undergraduate students. These undergraduate student participants have come from 35 different colleges and universities in the Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky schools such as the College of Mt. Saint Joeseph, Miami University, Northern Kentucky University, Thomas More College, the University of Cincinnati, and Xavier University. Students have also come from regional and national colleges and universities such as Barton College and the University of Notre Dame. The goal of this eminently successful program is to foster the future careers of undergraduate science students in order to increase the amount of scientists, physicians, and teachers. This goal comes at a time when the nation is lacking professionals in these areas. Nearly ninety percent of the students who have participated in our Undergraduate Research Education Program (UREP) and graduated from college are now physicians or other health care providers, scientists, or teachers. Many have stayed in the Northern Kentucky community. These accomplishments could not have been achieved without the support of the more than 5,000 contributors who receive our quarterly newsletter and lab notes. We thank you for your support as we work towards the conquest of cancer through research. Does anyone remember polio? Polio was conquered through basic scientific research, and we believe that cancer will be conquered through research too. Cancer - help us end it! |
![]() Construction continues on the Biospecimen Repository Center addition. The Biospecimen Repository Center is a three-story, 7,419 square foot addition to our historic 1922 facilities. Once completed, the Biospecimen Repository Center will preserve and protect the more than 1,200,000 archived tissue specimens from St. Elizabeth Healthcare, Covington, KY and The Christ Hospital, Cincinnati, OH. These specimens are vital to our cancer research mission since they provide a locally sourced base of information on which to draw conclusions about cancer incidence. The Biospecimen Repository Center will maintain specimens from more than 59,000 cancer patients, including: Together with St. Elizabeth Healthcare and The Christ Hospital Wood Hudson Cancer Research Laboratory has created methods in order to keep the identities of all tissue specimen donors confidential and anonymous. Tissue specimens are removed during surgery, and Wood Hudson Cancer Research Laboratory never uses specimens from embryos or stem cells. |
Mission Statement |
OUR MISSION |
Working Towards The Conquest Of Cancer Through Research |
Wood Hudson Cancer Research Laboratory, Inc. is a professional, independent, not-for-profit,
publicly supported, research institute dedicated to the discovery of new
knowledge regarding the causes, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of
cancer.
Wood Hudson Cancer Research Laboratory is a not-for-profit enterprise, and therefore no organization or individual profits financially from its operation and all discoveries resulting from ongoing research are freely given to the scientific and medical community through promptly reported peer-reviewed publications. Wood Hudson Cancer Research Laboratory approaches the cancer problem three ways: 1) study of clinical cases and experimental models of cancer to learn new methods of cancer prevention, diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment; 2) study of environmental causes of cancer, particularly food and drinking water chemicals, and 3) provision of training and "hands-on" research experience for tomorrow's scientists and physicians through its Undergraduate Research Education Program |
