The Conquest of Cancer Through Research
March 2021 eNews
One Year into the Pandemic You remember where you were when lockdown started last year. We all have our own personal stories of life during the pandemic. Although it hasn't been easy, many things we have learned this year are an improvement over the old way of doing things! Here at Wood Hudson, we now wear masks and practice social distancing. We send our tissue slides to Nashville to Dr. Larry Douglass, a board certified pathologist, who can view and share images from an online microscope, instead of visiting the Lab one week in every month. We hold meetings of the Board of Trustees on Zoom. But nothing changed more than our Summer Undergraduate Research and Education Program (UREP). Most institutions cancelled all summer research and internships in 2020. With only a few months to plan, Wood Hudson scientists created an online version of summer UREP that was enormously successful. It is a pleasure to be involved in a Lab that looks at all manner of problems with an inventive mind. Thank you to our numerous supporters who have given during this unique year. We honor those we have lost, and congratulate all who remain to continue moving forward in 2021. Virtual UREP will be offered again this coming summer. We look forward to working with bright young people who will contribute to the conquest of cancer through research. Interested college students should contact Dr. Julia Carter at jcarter@woodhudson.org.
Trustee Offers Matching Gift Dr. Ron Snyder, a member of the Wood Hudson Board of Trustees, was heavily involved in 2020 Summer UREP. Specifically, Dr. Snyder aided in discussions regarding the application of the scientific method, the process of scientific publication, and the pharmaceutical perspective on drug safety analysis. Dr. Snyder says, "COVID could have stalled the UREP program in its tracks but for the insight of Dr. Carter who established a virtual program that was embraced by the students. Elements of this program have and will continue to define the future of the cancer program at Wood Hudson." Advice to students from Dr. Snyder: "Plan a career track in cancer research or related field, but add flexibility so that plan has decision points which assure success. Make the most of opportunities when they arise; exceed expectations and stand out against the background. Extra effort always makes a difference." Great advice for anyone. Dr. Snyder has generously offered a matching gift up to $5,000 on donations made to Wood Hudson this spring. If you have never given to Wood Hudson Cancer Research Lab, now is the time to do it! Your $20 gift becomes $40; your $100 gift becomes $200! Together, we can raise $10,000 for the Lab! Donate NOW! We thank Dr. Snyder, also, for being a monthly donor at Wood Hudson! Recurring donations are very valuable to the Lab, as these donations make budget planning easier. A monthly recurring donation allows you, the donor, to spread your financial impact of giving across the entire year. Large or small, each donation makes an impact.
